To help you it is best that you always provide your hardware specs, operating system, and software (firewall, anti-virus, and anti-spyware).
This is for Windows XP or Vista
Their are a few things that can cause a computer to run slow: dust, poor ventilation, insufficient hardware, damaged hardware, registry errors, disk fragmentation, malware, too many start-up programs, insufficient disk space, and junk files.
All the following are FREE (Downloads can be found at Download.com)
A cool program I like to run before performing system slowing tasks – SmartClose (Windows XP only, have not tested on Vista)
This program closes out of most unnecessary running tasks and programs, you can add tasks you want to keep running to a list. Programs can be restored upon request or at the next computer boot.
Change system settings, especially in Windows Vista, to best performance for lighter use of the hardware (cpu, processer and video card).
–Start> Control Panel> System> Advanced Tab> Under “Performance”> Settings> Click on the “Adjust for best performance” option then “Ok”
Uninstall unused programs, update your computer regularly, update obsolete or old programs.
    Run Disk Cleanup – Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Cleanup
    Run Disk Defragmenter – Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Defragmenter
Remove Programs from Startup – Start> Run> msconfig
–Click on the Startup tab and uncheck the boxes of programs unnecessary to run at startup
Install and Run ONE Antivirus Program (Can cause system to slow down if the shield is active)
    –AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition http://www.grisoft.com/
    *–Avast Anti-Virus Home Edition http://www.avast.com/
    –Avira Anti-Virus http://www.free-av.com/
Install and Run Anti-Spyware (Can cause system to slow down if the shield is active)
    *–Spybot Search and Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/
    *–Spyware Terminator http://www.spywareterminator.com/
    –AdAware http://www.lavasoft.com/
    *–Spyware Blaster
Install and Run System Optimization tool
    *–Ccleaner (Strongly Recommended) http://www.ccleaner.com/
    *–Advanced WindowsCare http://www.iobit.com/
    –Glary Utilities http://www.glaryutilities.com/
    *–Auslogics Registry Defrag http://www.auslogics.com/
    Internet Browsers
    *–Firefox
    –Opera
    –Avant
To Maintain Your Systems Safety a Firewall is Recommended (Can cause system to slow down if the shield is active)
    *–Comodo
    –Zonealarm
    * = Favorites (For installing all recommended RAM is 1GB+, Free hard drive space 10GB+, and a decent 2.0Ghz+ processor,
If all this fails then you need new hardware/upgrades or you need to format/reinstall your hard drive/operating system.

    Aside from any existing malware issues;
For Windows, a reliable & fast start-up often depends on
how the system is put away.
Turning a Windows system “OFF” (from ‘Start> Turn Off Computer…’ button) is not the best way to put your system away for the night (or extended periods) and forcing a shutdown with the power button is NEVER a good option; only a last resort.
It prevents Windows from ‘housekeeping’ system files to get ready for the next start-up, and may, over time, cause file corruption; slow down; even break Windows.
A much better method is ‘Hibernation’.
Shutdowns using the ‘hibernate’ method gives several benefits: It’s a near zero power state; all ‘Startup’ folder items are already loaded, Windows background services are already ‘up’, and all open work moves to the hard drive, yielding really fast start-ups.
And if power is lost (storms, etc.) the document or picture you were working on won’t be lost like it would be in ‘Standby’ mode, and the system will resume just where you left it.
Go to Start> Control Panel> Power Options> Hibernate: here check the box.
To show this option when turning unit off; Start> Turn Off Computer> HOLD down ‘Shift’ key & ‘Standby’ becomes “Hibernate’: tick that.
(Some systems have a ‘crescent moon’ key to go right to hibernate).
Note: emergency power disconnect can be done without any affect on the system, but unfiltered power spikes will likely cause damage to the system.
To start up, push the power button, and Windows will resume right where you left it, bada bing.

haha wanna know the very quickest way to fix it? Go to Start, Run, Type in MSCONFIG, goto Startup tab, and hid Disable All. then hit apply, ok. then log off then log back in.
you see the main reason a computer starts running slow is because slowly you install more and more programs that run on your computer at startup. And they all run together at the same time using up all the PC’s power/ram/memory, we’d you’d like to call it. By following the instructions above you’ll be able to effectively increase your computers speed. uhm hit me up and ill help you out even more to optimize your comptuers speed. using all freeware =))

first of all all we can give u r assumptions bc u did not post up alot of info.
do this, my computer, right click in the white space and click properties. press the general tab and write that info down and post that up. also, do you think u have a virus? wat type of antivirus programs do you have? how big are your harddrives and how full are they? and finally, having alot of icons on your desktop can slow your computer down, make sure that is not happening.

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause “computer slow”.
Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you’ve installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it’s Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!
There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.http://www.make-pc-fast.com/
You can download and scan your computer for free.

Reduce the number of programs loading at startup, run a diskcleanup.
Have you defragged in a while? Get rid of unwanted programs, run diskcleanup and defrag using a good program like Diskeeper. If your drive is severely fragmented or has less than 15% free space, just set it to automatic mode, it will defrag in the background without any conflict. You can also defrag your system files if required.
Try the free 30 day trial version. http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.aspx
