How Can You Fix Internet Explorer From Keeping Programs From Connecting To The Internet?

For a while now, I have not been able to get updates or downloads from programs such as Windows Media, iTunes, Amazon downloads etc. They all say "can't connect" I tried to start using Mozilla Foxfire instead, but it says can't connect too. I have tried to get my DSL provider to help (Verizon), but because I can still access the net and download while on Internet Explorer 7, they said its not their problem. Any suggestions? I'm super frustrated!

wow, everyone else disables the programs from updating because they do crazy stuff in the background and slow you down… and you WANT them to connect….
    Crazy world.
Take my word for it… they are connecting… and spying on you everytime you make one move…
